January 6, 1873: Day 5 of our journey. My decision to rely on speed bore fruit today, as we left our pursuers in the dust and made great progress. We rode so hard that I feared the heat might prove as deadly as our human foes; but in the end we made camp greatly cheered. With luck we may see Calico tomorrow, where I am most eager to buy more provisions.
