January 23, 1873: Day 21 of our journey. I forbade further searching for gold today, despite the men’s insistence that all the signs hereabouts were good for it. In the evening we went hunting, and replenished our stocks. I was relieved to report that we saw no sign of any bandits. However we made somewhat slower progress today. I had thought we might make it to town, but we shall not see it until tomorrow at the earliest.
