January 24, 1873: Day 22 of our journey. A calamitous day. Perhaps we had grown complacent. Perhaps our fate is written at our birth. Be that as it may, we were ambushed by the Griggs Gang soon after sunup. They seemed to have grown more numerous. All were killed save myself and Ike. I dragged Griggs onto my own horse, and by a miracle we broke free. We lost the gang, but did not know where we were. We wandered for a time. We were afraid of being found, but had we not sheltered from the terrible heat I think we too would have perished. In the evening, through naught but luck, we made it into town. We were running low on ammunition, so I bought more. We were also offered some new kind of pistol, apparently superior to our own six-shooters, but I declined. Instead I engaged two new hands. They are brothers, named Nate and Bob. I explained the danger to them, but they claimed to be ready for it.
