January 26, 1873: Day 24 of our journey. Another disaster has befallen us. Only a few miles from town, and I am the only one left alive, save for Griggs. A strange fancy has struck me, that he is no mortal man, but some kind of devilish mannequin. His bland smile may as well be painted on. We ride towards his death, and he smiles. We die around him, and he smiles just the same. I suppose I should record the manner of my comrades’ deaths, although I do not know who will read this journal. We were ambushed early in the day. Nate took a bullet right through his heart. We fled, but found ourselves lost. Yet again the day became hot, as if it had been waiting for a sign of weakness. Both Bob and Ike grew confused, then began raving, and at last died. I buried them and went on my way.
